Questions about this test
Why is a urine culture done in pregnancy if I have no symptoms?
Some pregnant women have bacteria in the urine without any symptoms. Left untreated, this can lead to a kidney infection, so antenatal care often includes a urine culture. If bacteria are found, your doctor can choose a medicine that is suitable in pregnancy.
What does mixed growth on a urine culture mean?
It usually means skin or vaginal germs got into the sample. A fresh, carefully collected midstream sample is often requested.
Should I give the urine sample before starting antibiotics?
Yes, if possible, because antibiotics can stop bacteria growing in the lab. Tell the staff if you have already taken any.
