Urine nitrite test
Quick answer: This test checks urine for nitrite, which some bacteria make when they infect the urinary tract. It is used with other urine tests to screen for a urinary tract infection.
- SampleUrine
- TakesA few minutes to give the sample
- Before the testA first morning, clean-catch sample is often preferred.
How the test is done
- 1You collect a midstream sample, ideally urine held in the bladder for about four hours
- 2A dipstick pad is dipped in the urine
- 3The pad turns pink if nitrite is present
- 4The result is read as positive or negative
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A negative result does not rule out infection, so a urine culture may be needed.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result can point to a urine infection with bacteria such as E. coli, which turn nitrate into nitrite. A negative result does not rule out infection, since some bacteria do not make nitrite and urine may not stay in the bladder long enough.
Who usually has this test
People with urinary symptoms, and pregnant women being checked for infection without symptoms.
Risks and aftercare
There are no risks; a urine culture may follow if infection is suspected.
Names and options
Also called: nitrite in urine

Questions about this test
Why is first-morning urine preferred for the nitrite test?
Bacteria need time in the bladder to turn nitrate into nitrite, usually about four hours. Morning urine has been held overnight, so it gives the test more chance to pick this up.
Can I have a urine infection with a negative nitrite?
Yes. Some common bacteria do not make nitrite, and passing urine often can also cause a negative result. A urine culture is more reliable.
Can a positive nitrite be wrong?
If urine sits at room temperature for a long time, bacteria can grow and give a false positive. That is why the sample should reach the lab quickly.
