What your results can mean
Reading your report
A sample that is not collected cleanly can show white cells from the skin or vagina; your doctor may order a urine culture.
If the result is outside the usual range
White cells in urine can point to a urine infection, kidney inflammation, kidney stones, or contamination from vaginal discharge. A negative result makes infection less likely but does not rule it out.
Who usually has this test
People with burning, frequent urination or fever, and pregnant women at routine checks.
Risks and aftercare
There are no risks; drink fluids as usual and see a doctor if you develop fever or back pain.

Questions about this test
Do white cells in urine always mean infection?
No. Vaginal discharge, kidney stones or recent sex can also raise them. A urine culture helps confirm whether bacteria are growing.
What is leukocyte esterase?
It is an enzyme released by white blood cells. The dipstick changes colour when it detects it, which is a quick sign of white cells in urine.
What if leukocytes are positive but the culture is negative?
This is called sterile pyuria and can be seen with recent antibiotics, kidney stones, or infections that do not grow on routine culture, such as TB. Your doctor may order more tests.
