Sperm donor treatment: how it works in India

A sperm donor provides screened, anonymous sperm through a registered ART bank, which can be used for IUI or, if needed, IVF. Donor sperm is usually considered when the male partner has no sperm that can be retrieved, or by single women.

What is sperm donor treatment?

Donor sperm is used when the male partner has no sperm that can be used, when there is a serious genetic condition, or by single women. Sperm donors are screened for infections and genetic risks, and the sperm is frozen and quarantined before use.

Under the ART (Regulation) Act 2021, donors must be 21–55 years old, sperm must come from a registered ART bank, one donor's sperm can be supplied to only one couple or woman, and donor details are kept confidential.

Who Donor sperm may help

  • No sperm in the semen and none retrievable by surgery
  • Risk of passing on a serious genetic condition
  • Single women

Good to know. If the male partner has azoospermia, a urologist's assessment and, where suitable, surgical retrieval (such as micro-TESE) is usually discussed before donor sperm.

How to prepare

  • The male partner (if a couple) should see a fertility specialist or urologist first, to check whether his own sperm could be retrieved.
  • The woman has basic fertility tests, including a tube check if IUI is planned.
  • Both partners receive counselling and sign consent.
  • Ask about blood group matching and how the bank describes donors.

Donor sperm treatment, step by step

  1. Counselling and consent

Both partners (if a couple) receive counselling and sign consent.

  2. Donor matching

The bank matches by blood group and physical characteristics.

  3. Treatment

IUI around ovulation, or IVF/ICSI if there are other fertility factors.

  4. Pregnancy test

About two weeks after insemination or transfer.

What to expect

  • With IUI, treatment is quick and needs no anaesthesia.
  • Several IUI cycles may be needed.

After treatment

  • After IUI, normal activity the same day; pregnancy test in about two weeks.
  • After IVF, follow the usual advice after embryo transfer.

Benefits, limitations and risks

Benefits

  • Makes pregnancy possible when no sperm is available
  • Often possible with simple IUI
  • Strict screening of donors under Indian law

Limitations

  • The child will not be genetically related to the male partner
  • Several IUI cycles may be needed
  • Family and identity questions need support

Risks and side effects

  • The same as IUI or IVF.
  • Family and identity questions — counselling helps couples prepare.

Donor sperm success rate: what affects it

Results depend on the woman's age and fertility, and on whether IUI or IVF is used.

Frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for sperm donors in India?

Under the ART Act 2021, semen donors must be between 21 and 55 years old, and sperm from one donor can be supplied to only one couple or woman.

Who can be a sperm donor in India?

Under the ART Act 2021, semen donors must be 21–55 years old and are screened through a registered bank.

Will the donor know our identity?

No. Donor and recipients remain anonymous to each other under Indian law.

Is donor sperm treatment usually IUI?

Often, if the woman has open tubes and no other fertility problem. Otherwise IVF may be advised.

Can single women use donor sperm in India?

Yes. The ART Act 2021 allows clinics to treat women above 21, including single women.

Can we use a known donor?

Indian law requires donor sperm to come through a registered ART bank with donor details kept confidential, so known donation is not the route the Act provides.
