Complete urine analysis (urine routine)
Quick answer: A complete urine analysis checks the colour, clarity and chemistry of urine (such as sugar, protein and pH) and looks at it under a microscope for cells, crystals and bacteria. It is a common test for urine infections, kidney problems and diabetes, and is part of routine pregnancy check-ups.

Questions about this test
How do I give a clean-catch urine sample?
Wash your hands and the genital area, start passing urine into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the sterile container. Close the lid without touching the inside. Tell staff if you are on your period, as blood can affect the result.
Does a routine urine test show pregnancy?
No. A routine urine analysis does not check for pregnancy. A separate urine pregnancy test or a blood beta hCG test is used for that.
Can my period affect a urine test?
Yes, blood from your period can mix with the sample and show up as blood or red cells. If possible, wait until your period ends, or tell the staff so they can note it.
