How the test is done

  1. 1You lie on your back with your belly uncovered
  2. 2Gel is spread on your belly and the probe is moved over it
  3. 3The sonographer checks the baby's brain, face, spine, heart, organs and limbs one by one
  4. 4You may be asked to walk or change position if the baby is lying awkwardly

What your results can mean

Reading your report

Most scans are normal; if something unusual is seen, your doctor will explain what it means and whether more tests are needed.

If the result is outside the usual range

The scan can show differences in how the baby's organs, spine, heart or limbs have formed, a low-lying placenta, or fluid concerns. Most scans are normal, and many findings are minor and need only follow-up.

Who usually has this test

All pregnant women around 18 to 22 weeks, including after IVF, and women with a higher chance on earlier screening.

Risks and aftercare

No radiation is used and it is considered safe for you and the baby; lying on your back for a while can be tiring, so tell staff if you feel unwell.
