NT scan (nuchal translucency scan)

Quick answer: An NT scan measures the fluid at the back of the baby's neck and checks early development. With blood tests it estimates the chance of conditions such as Down syndrome. It is offered to all pregnant women between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy.

  • SampleImaging (no sample)
  • TakesAbout 20 to 40 minutes, longer if the baby needs to move position
  • Before the testYou may be asked to come with a comfortably full bladder; follow the instructions you are given.
  • In fertility careIt is part of routine first-trimester screening, including in IVF pregnancies.

How the test is done

  1. 1You may be asked to come with a comfortably full bladder
  2. 2You lie on your back and gel is spread on your lower belly
  3. 3The sonographer waits for the baby to lie in the right position to measure the neck fluid
  4. 4Sometimes a transvaginal scan is used if the baby is hard to see

What your results can mean

Reading your report

The NT result gives a chance (risk), not a diagnosis, and is often combined with blood tests; your doctor will explain whether any further tests are advised.

If the result is outside the usual range

A thicker than usual neck fluid measurement can mean a higher chance of Down syndrome, other chromosome conditions or heart problems, but most babies with a raised NT are healthy. The scan can also show some major structural problems early.

Who usually has this test

All pregnant women between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days who choose first-trimester screening, including after IVF.

Risks and aftercare

It uses sound waves with no radiation and does not harm the baby; you may be asked to walk around or cough if the baby is in an awkward position.

Questions about this test

When should the NT scan be done?

The NT scan must be done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy, when the baby is the right size for the measurement. Book it early so it is not missed.

What happens if the NT is high?

A higher NT means a higher chance of some conditions, not that the baby definitely has one. Your doctor may offer more tests, such as a detailed scan, NIPT or a diagnostic test.

Is the NT scan a diagnosis of Down syndrome?

No, it is a screening test that gives a chance, not a yes or no answer. If the chance is high, you will be offered further tests that can give a definite answer.
