Growth scan (pregnancy)
Quick answer: A growth scan measures the baby's head, tummy and thigh bone to estimate size and weight, and checks the fluid around the baby and the placenta. It is usually done in the third trimester, or earlier if the baby seems small or large, or with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or twins.
- SampleImaging (no sample)
- TakesAbout 20 to 30 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
- In fertility careIt is often repeated in higher-risk pregnancies, including twin pregnancies and some IVF pregnancies.
How the test is done
- 1You lie on your back, tilted to one side if lying flat makes you dizzy
- 2Gel is spread on your belly and the probe is moved over it
- 3The baby's head, tummy and thigh bone are measured
- 4The fluid around the baby and the placenta position are also checked
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Measurements are compared with what is expected for the stage of pregnancy; your doctor will explain what your report means for you and your baby.
If the result is outside the usual range
A growth scan can show a baby measuring smaller or larger than expected for the weeks of pregnancy, slowing growth on repeat scans, too little or too much fluid, or placenta concerns. Weight estimates can be off by a margin, so trends over several scans matter more than one number.
Who usually has this test
Women in the third trimester, especially with twins, high blood pressure, diabetes, an IVF pregnancy, or a bump measuring small or large.
Risks and aftercare
There is no radiation and it is safe for you and the baby; pressure from the probe on a full belly can be uncomfortable.

Questions about this test
What does EFW mean on a growth scan?
EFW stands for estimated fetal weight, calculated from the baby's measurements. It is an estimate and can be off by about 10 to 15 percent either way.
What does it mean if my baby is small on a growth scan?
Some babies are simply small and healthy, while others are small because the placenta is not working well. Your doctor may add Doppler scans and repeat growth scans to see which applies.
How often are growth scans done?
In a low-risk pregnancy, sometimes only once in the third trimester or not at all. In higher-risk pregnancies they may be repeated every two to four weeks.
