What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A toe X-ray can show a broken toe, a dislocated joint, arthritis or gout changes, or a small extra bone. It helps decide whether the toe can simply be strapped or needs more treatment.
Who usually has this test
People who have stubbed, crushed or dropped something on a toe, especially the big toe, or have a toe that looks bent.
Risks and aftercare

Questions about this test
Do I need an X-ray for a broken little toe?
Many small toe fractures are treated by strapping to the next toe whether or not they are X-rayed. An X-ray is more useful for the big toe, a toe that looks bent, or a joint injury.
Can a toe X-ray show an ingrown toenail?
No, nails and skin do not show well on X-ray. An X-ray may be used only if a long-standing nail infection might have spread to the bone.
Why is my big toe X-rayed for joint pain?
The big toe joint is a common place for arthritis and gout. The X-ray can show joint narrowing, bony spurs or erosions that help your doctor find the cause.
