Elbow X-ray
Quick answer: An elbow X-ray shows the bones of the elbow joint and can show fractures, dislocations and joint changes. Doctors usually order it after a fall or injury, or for elbow pain, swelling or reduced movement.

- 3For the side view you bend the elbow to a right angle with thumb pointing up

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
An elbow X-ray can show a fracture, a dislocated joint, a swollen joint lining that suggests a hidden fracture, or arthritis and loose bone pieces. Tennis elbow and tendon problems usually do not show on X-ray.
Who usually has this test
Adults and children who have fallen on the arm, cannot fully straighten the elbow, or have elbow pain and swelling.
Risks and aftercare
Straightening or bending a painful elbow can hurt briefly, so tell the radiographer if it does; the dose is low, and mention any chance of pregnancy.

Questions about this test
What does a fat pad sign on an elbow X-ray mean?
It means fluid or blood has pushed a pad of fat away from the bone, which can happen with a fracture inside the joint. Even if no break is seen, your doctor may treat it as a possible fracture.
Why are children's elbow X-rays hard to read?
Children's elbows have several growth plates that appear at different ages and can look like breaks. Doctors compare with expected patterns, and sometimes take a picture of the other elbow.
Can an elbow X-ray show tennis elbow?
Usually not, because tennis elbow affects the tendons rather than the bone. It is mainly diagnosed by examination, and an ultrasound can show the tendon if needed.
