Abdomen X-ray

Quick answer: An abdomen X-ray takes pictures of the belly area to show the bowel pattern, trapped gas, some stones and swallowed objects. Doctors usually order it for sudden belly pain, suspected bowel blockage or a swallowed object. A standing view helps show air or fluid levels.

  • SampleImaging (no sample)
  • TakesAbout 10 minutes, a little longer if a standing view is added
  • Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed, but remove metal items from the area and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

How the test is done

  1. 1You change into a gown and remove belts, coins and anything metal around your waist
  2. 2For the front view you lie flat on your back on the X-ray table
  3. 3For the erect view you stand against an upright plate with your belly facing it
  4. 4You hold your breath for a second or two while each picture is taken

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

The pictures can show a swollen, gas-filled bowel that may point to a blockage, air outside the bowel, some kidney or gallstones, or a swallowed object. Many belly problems do not show on a plain X-ray, so a scan may still be needed.

Who usually has this test

Adults and children with sudden or severe belly pain, vomiting with a swollen belly, or a swallowed coin, battery or other object.

Risks and aftercare

You feel nothing while the picture is taken and can eat and go home straight away; the radiation dose is small, but always tell staff first if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test

Why is an abdomen X-ray taken standing up?

When you stand, gas rises and fluid settles, so trapped air and fluid levels in a blocked bowel become easier to see. Air under the diaphragm, which can mean a hole in the bowel, also shows better on an upright picture.

Is an abdomen X-ray or an ultrasound better for belly pain?

They show different things. An X-ray is good for bowel gas patterns and swallowed objects, while an ultrasound is better for the liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pelvic organs, so your doctor picks based on your symptoms.

Can an abdomen X-ray show a swallowed coin or battery?

Yes, most metal objects show clearly on an abdomen X-ray, which helps your doctor see where the object is. A swallowed button battery needs urgent medical attention, so go to a doctor straight away rather than waiting.
