How the test is done

  1. 1You take off your shoe, sock and any anklet
  2. 2You sit or lie on the table with your leg straight and foot resting on the plate
  3. 3Your foot is turned slightly inwards for one view, and on its side for another
  4. 4You keep the ankle still for a moment while each picture is taken

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

The X-ray can show a broken bone, a joint that has slipped out of place, small bone chips, or wear and arthritis in the joint. Ligament sprains do not show directly, so a normal X-ray does not rule out a sprain.

Who usually has this test

People who have twisted or injured an ankle and cannot put weight on it, or who have ongoing ankle pain or swelling.

Risks and aftercare

Moving a sore ankle into position can hurt for a moment, but the X-ray itself is not felt; the dose is low, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test

Do I need an X-ray for a twisted ankle?

Not always. Doctors usually advise an X-ray when you cannot take a few steps, or when there is tenderness over particular parts of the ankle bones, as these suggest a possible fracture.

Can an ankle X-ray show a ligament tear?

No, ligaments are soft tissue and do not show on X-ray. If a ligament injury is suspected, your doctor may suggest an ultrasound or MRI.

Why are several views of the ankle taken?

A thin crack can be hidden in one direction and only seen from another angle. Front, side and slightly turned views together give a fuller picture of the joint.
