How the test is done

  1. 1You arrive with a full bladder and pass urine in the toilet just before the scan
  2. 2You lie on your back straight away with your lower belly uncovered
  3. 3Gel is spread above the pubic bone and the probe measures the bladder
  4. 4The machine works out how much urine is left

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

A high amount of urine left behind can be seen with an enlarged prostate, a blockage, weak bladder muscles, nerve problems or some medicines. A low amount usually means the bladder empties well.

Who usually has this test

Men with prostate symptoms, people with a weak stream, leakage, frequent urination or repeated urine infections, and some people after surgery.

Risks and aftercare

There is no radiation and no aftercare; you can go home as soon as the measurement is done.

Questions about this test

Why is the scan done right after I pass urine?

The aim is to measure what your bladder could not empty. If there is a delay, more urine collects and the result can look higher than it is.

What causes urine to be left in the bladder?

Common causes include an enlarged prostate in men, weak bladder muscles, nerve problems and some medicines. Your doctor will look at the result together with your symptoms.

Can urine left in the bladder cause infections?

Yes, urine that stays in the bladder can make infections more likely. This is one reason doctors measure it in people with repeated urine infections.
