What your results can mean

Reading your report

A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

The scan can show gallstones, fatty liver, enlarged organs, kidney stones or swelling, fluid in the belly, cysts or lumps, and with the pelvis, fibroids, ovarian cysts or an enlarged prostate. Bowel problems are often not well seen on ultrasound.

Who usually has this test

People with belly pain, bloating, jaundice, abnormal liver or kidney blood tests, or a lump in the belly.

Risks and aftercare

There is no radiation; firm pressure can be uncomfortable if your belly is sore, and you can eat and drink normally afterwards.

Questions about this test

Why do I need to fast before an abdomen ultrasound?

Fasting keeps the gallbladder full so it can be seen clearly, and reduces gas in the bowel. Your instructions will say how long to fast and whether water is allowed.

Can an abdomen ultrasound show fatty liver?

Yes, fatty liver often makes the liver look brighter than usual on ultrasound. Blood tests help show whether it is affecting liver function.

Why do I need a full bladder?

A full bladder pushes the bowel aside and acts as a window to the pelvic organs. It helps show the bladder, uterus or prostate.
