Liver function test (LFT)
Quick answer: A liver function test is a group of blood tests, usually including bilirubin, liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, ALP) and proteins, that shows how your liver is working. What your results can mean
Reading your report
Normal ranges differ between labs, so compare your result with the range printed on your report and discuss it with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
Raised liver enzymes or bilirubin can be seen with fatty liver, hepatitis, alcohol, some medicines, gallstones or a blocked bile duct. Low albumin can point to long-term liver disease, kidney protein loss or poor nutrition.
Who usually has this test
People with jaundice, tiredness or upper tummy pain, those on medicines that affect the liver, people who drink alcohol regularly, and pregnant women with itching or high blood pressure.
Risks and aftercare
Nothing special is needed afterwards, apart from watching for a small bruise.

Questions about this test
Do I need to fast for a liver function test?
Fasting is not usually needed for a liver function test. Some labs prefer a fasting sample if other tests are being done at the same time, so check when you book.
What does a high SGPT in my LFT mean?
A raised SGPT (ALT) suggests some irritation or damage to liver cells, which can have many causes, such as fatty liver, infection, alcohol or medicines. A single result does not give a diagnosis, so your doctor will look at the whole picture and may repeat the test.
What tests are included in a liver function test?
An LFT usually includes bilirubin, SGOT (AST), SGPT (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, and total protein with albumin and globulin. Some labs also include GGT. Ask the hospital which tests their LFT and liver profile include.
