Questions about this test
What is autoimmune hepatitis?
Autoimmune hepatitis is a condition in which the immune system attacks the liver, causing inflammation. It can be treated, usually with medicines that calm the immune system, so finding it early matters.
Is anti-LKM the only test for autoimmune hepatitis?
No. Doctors usually test a group of antibodies, such as ANA, anti-smooth muscle, anti-LKM and anti-SLA, along with immunoglobulin levels. A liver biopsy is often needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Can a positive anti-LKM result be caused by something else?
Yes. Anti-LKM antibodies can sometimes be found in people with hepatitis C or after some medicines. Your doctor will look at your other results before making a diagnosis.
