Questions about this test
What is the difference between SGOT and SGPT?
Both are enzymes that rise with liver damage. SGPT is found mostly in the liver, while SGOT is also found in heart and muscle, so SGPT is more specific to the liver.
What does an SGOT to SGPT ratio mean?
Doctors sometimes look at the ratio between the two. A higher SGOT than SGPT can be seen with alcohol-related liver disease or advanced liver scarring, but the ratio alone does not give a diagnosis.
Can exercise raise SGOT?
Yes. Hard exercise can damage muscle slightly and raise SGOT. Avoid very intense workouts for a day or two before the test if possible.
