Questions about this test
Can fatty liver raise SGPT?
Yes. Fatty liver is one of the most common reasons for a mildly raised SGPT, especially in people with excess weight, diabetes or high cholesterol. Weight loss and activity often help bring it down.
Can medicines or supplements raise SGPT?
Yes. Some medicines, including certain painkillers, TB medicines and herbal or bodybuilding supplements, can raise SGPT. Tell your doctor about everything you take, but do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
Should a mildly high SGPT be repeated?
Often yes. A mild rise may settle on its own, so doctors commonly repeat the test after a few weeks and look for causes if it stays high.
