If the result is outside the usual range
A high total protein or globulin can be seen with long-term infection, inflammation, dehydration or conditions such as multiple myeloma. A low albumin can be seen with liver disease, kidney protein loss, poor nutrition or gut absorption problems.

Questions about this test
What does a low albumin mean?
Low albumin can mean the liver is not making enough, protein is being lost through the kidneys or gut, or nutrition is poor. It can also fall during serious illness. Your doctor will look for the cause.
What is the A/G ratio?
The A/G ratio compares albumin with globulin in your blood. A change in the ratio can give clues about liver disease, kidney disease or immune conditions, but it is read with the other results.
What happens if my globulin is high?
A high globulin can be seen with long-term infection, inflammation or liver disease. If it is high without a clear reason, your doctor may order protein electrophoresis to look for an abnormal protein.
