LBC (liquid-based cytology) cervical screening
Quick answer: LBC is a type of Pap test in which cells gently brushed from the cervix are placed in a liquid and checked under a microscope for abnormal changes. It is used for cervical cancer screening and to follow up earlier abnormal results.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Results are reported as normal or as a type of cell change; your doctor will explain whether any follow-up is needed.
If the result is outside the usual range
A normal result means no abnormal cells were seen. An abnormal result can show cell changes, often linked to HPV infection, which may need repeat testing or a closer look with colposcopy; it is not the same as a cancer diagnosis. Ask the hospital what this listed test is for, as it appears in an unusual section of their list.
Who usually has this test
Women in the age group for cervical screening, women with earlier abnormal results, and many women before fertility treatment.
Risks and aftercare
You may have mild discomfort or light spotting for a day, which usually settles on its own.

Questions about this test
Does an LBC Pap test hurt?
Most women feel some pressure or mild discomfort when the speculum is in place, but it usually lasts only a few minutes. Relaxing your muscles and telling the staff if it is uncomfortable can help.
Can I have an LBC test during my period?
It is better to book a day when you are not bleeding, as blood can make the sample harder to read. Mid-cycle is often suggested. Ask the hospital if you are unsure of the timing.
Does an abnormal LBC result mean cancer?
No. Most abnormal results show minor cell changes that often clear on their own or can be treated early. Your doctor may suggest HPV testing, a repeat test or colposcopy to look more closely.
