Fetal Doppler scan
Quick answer: A fetal Doppler scan measures blood flow in the umbilical cord, the baby's brain vessels and sometimes the mother's uterine arteries, to check how well the placenta is supplying the baby. Doctors order it in later pregnancy when the baby is small, there is high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia, reduced fluid or reduced movements.
- SampleImaging (no sample)
- TakesAbout 20 to 30 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
- In fertility careIt helps monitor babies at higher risk, including in some twin or IVF pregnancies.
How the test is done
- 1You lie on your back, often tilted slightly to one side for comfort
- 2Gel is put on your belly and the probe is moved to find the baby and cord
- 3Blood flow is measured in the umbilical cord and the baby's brain vessels
- 4The uterine arteries may also be checked low on each side of your belly
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Measurements are compared with what is expected for the stage of pregnancy; your doctor will explain what your report means for you and your baby.
If the result is outside the usual range
The scan can show reduced or reversed flow in the umbilical cord, or changes in the baby's brain vessel flow, which can be seen when the placenta is not working as well as it should. Doctors use the results to decide how closely to monitor the baby and when delivery may be advised.
Who usually has this test
Pregnant women whose baby is small for dates, or who have high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, low fluid, reduced movements or a twin pregnancy.
Risks and aftercare
No radiation is used, so it is considered safe in pregnancy; lying flat can make you feel faint, so tell staff and they will tilt you onto your side.

Questions about this test
What is umbilical artery Doppler?
It measures how easily blood flows from the baby to the placenta through the cord. Raised resistance can suggest the placenta is not working well.
Is a fetal Doppler scan the same as a home heartbeat monitor?
No. A hospital Doppler scan measures blood flow in specific vessels using ultrasound images, while a home device only picks up a heartbeat sound and is not advised for checking a baby's wellbeing.
How often is a fetal Doppler repeated?
It depends on the findings and your risk. Some women need it every week or two, and some more often, as decided by their doctor.
