What your results can mean

Reading your report

Results are reported as detected or not detected; a negative result later in the illness does not rule out dengue.

If the result is outside the usual range

A detected result confirms dengue virus in the blood and may name the dengue type. Not detected later in the illness does not rule out dengue, as the virus clears from blood within days.

Who usually has this test

People in the first few days of fever when doctors want direct confirmation of dengue or need to know the virus type.

Risks and aftercare

Nothing special for the test; keep up fluids and watch for warning signs.

Questions about this test

How is dengue PCR different from NS1?

Both work early in the illness. PCR detects the virus's genetic material and can identify the dengue type, while NS1 detects a virus protein.

Why does the dengue type matter?

There are four dengue types. Knowing the type is mainly useful for outbreak tracking and in some cases of severe or repeat infection.

When is dengue PCR not useful?

After about the first 5 to 7 days of fever, virus levels fall and PCR may miss it. Antibody tests are better then.
