How the test is done

  1. 1A nurse notes how many days you have had fever
  2. 2A vein in your arm is cleaned
  3. 3A needle draws a tube of blood
  4. 4The lab or a rapid card tests for the dengue NS1 protein

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A negative NS1 does not fully rule out dengue, especially after the first few days, so your doctor may add antibody tests and platelet counts.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive NS1 can point to dengue in the first days of fever. A negative result does not rule out dengue, especially after day 5 or in a repeat dengue infection.

Who usually has this test

People in Bangalore and other dengue areas with sudden high fever, headache, body pain or rash, especially during and after the monsoon.

Risks and aftercare

Nothing special after the blood draw; drink plenty of fluids and watch for warning signs as advised.

Questions about this test

When should the dengue NS1 test be done?

NS1 is best done in the first 1 to 5 days of fever. After that, dengue IgM antibody tests become more useful. Your doctor will also watch your platelet count.

What warning signs should I watch for with dengue?

Seek care quickly for severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding gums, black stools, extreme tiredness or restlessness. These are often seen as the fever falls.

Can I take painkillers for dengue fever?

Ask your doctor before taking any medicine. Some common painkillers can raise the risk of bleeding, so paracetamol is often preferred.
