What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive IgM usually suggests a recent or current infection and a positive IgG a past infection or immunity, but your doctor will read the result alongside your symptoms. A positive IgG with IgM can suggest a repeat dengue infection.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive IgM can point to a recent dengue infection, usually from about day 5 of fever. A positive IgG with IgM can suggest a repeat infection, and IgG alone often means a past infection.

Who usually has this test

People with fever for more than about 4 to 5 days where dengue is suspected, often tested with NS1.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare; keep drinking fluids and follow your doctor's advice on platelet checks.

Questions about this test

Why is dengue IgM negative early in fever?

IgM usually appears around 4 to 5 days after the fever starts. Earlier on, the NS1 antigen test is more useful.

Is a second dengue infection more serious?

A second infection with a different dengue type can carry a higher chance of severe dengue. Your doctor will watch you more closely.

Can dengue IgG be positive from an old infection?

Yes. Dengue IgG can stay positive for years, so on its own it often reflects a past infection.
