What your results can mean
Reading your report
Each test has its own range, which differs between labs; discuss the full report with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
Long clotting times can point to liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, blood thinners, inherited factor problems, or clotting factors being used up in severe illness. Normal results suggest the main clotting pathways are working.
Who usually has this test
People before surgery, with unexplained bleeding or liver disease, or on blood thinners, and some women in pregnancy.

Questions about this test
Why is a coagulation profile done before surgery?
It helps spot bleeding risks, especially in people with liver disease, a bleeding history or blood thinners. Not every operation needs it.
Do blood thinners affect the result?
Yes, medicines such as warfarin or heparin change the results. Tell the staff, and do not stop them without your doctor's advice.
Why does the tube filling level matter?
The tube contains a set amount of anticoagulant. Too little blood upsets the mix and can give a false result.
