Bleeding time and clotting time (BT, CT)
Quick answer: Bleeding time measures how long a small skin prick takes to stop bleeding, and clotting time measures how long blood takes to clot in a tube. These are older screening tests sometimes done before procedures; tests such as platelet count, PT and APTT are now more often used.
- SampleBlood
- TakesAbout 10 to 15 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed; tell staff about any blood thinners or painkillers you take.
How the test is done
- 1For bleeding time, a small prick is made on your fingertip or forearm
- 2The blood is blotted with filter paper every 30 seconds until it stops
- 3For clotting time, a little blood is collected in a glass tube
- 4The tube is tilted until the blood clots, and the time is noted
What your results can mean
Reading your report
These tests can miss mild bleeding disorders, so your doctor may order more specific tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
A long bleeding time can be seen with low platelets, platelet problems, von Willebrand disease or aspirin use. A long clotting time can be seen with severe clotting factor problems, though this test misses milder ones.
Who usually has this test
People with easy bleeding, and sometimes people before minor procedures, though many labs now use PT and APTT.
Risks and aftercare
The prick site may bruise or ooze slightly; press with cotton until it stops.

Questions about this test
Are BT and CT still useful?
They are simple and quick, but less reliable than modern tests such as PT, APTT and platelet counts. Many guidelines no longer advise them before surgery.
Can aspirin affect bleeding time?
Yes, aspirin and some painkillers can make bleeding time longer. Tell the staff about your medicines, but do not stop any without your doctor's advice.
Does the finger prick hurt?
It causes a brief sting. The cut is very small and heals quickly.
