Platelet count
Quick answer: A platelet count measures the number of platelets, the cells that help blood clot, in your blood. It is ordered for easy bruising or bleeding, in dengue and other fevers, before surgery, and with medicines that affect platelets.
- SampleBlood
- TakesAbout 5 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
- In fertility careA mild drop in platelets is common late in pregnancy, but a larger drop can be a sign of conditions such as pre-eclampsia, so doctors watch it.
How the test is done
- 1Blood is drawn into a purple-top tube
- 2The tube is mixed gently to stop clumping
- 3An analyser counts the platelets
- 4A smear is checked if the count is low or clumps are seen
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Clumping in the tube can give a falsely low result, so a low count is often checked on a smear; discuss your result with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low count can be seen with dengue and other infections, immune causes, some medicines, pregnancy and bone marrow problems. A high count can be seen with iron deficiency, inflammation, after surgery or with a bone marrow condition.
Who usually has this test
People with fever, especially suspected dengue, easy bruising or bleeding, and pregnant women.
Risks and aftercare
Bruising is possible, and more likely if your platelets are low.

Questions about this test
What causes a falsely low platelet count?
Platelets can clump in the tube and be undercounted. A smear, or a repeat sample in a different tube, can check this.
Do platelets fall in pregnancy?
A mild fall is common late in pregnancy and is usually harmless. Doctors check for other causes if the count is lower.
When do platelets drop in dengue?
They often fall around days 3 to 7 of the illness. Doctors repeat counts during this time.
