Lower leg (tibia and fibula) X-ray

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A lower leg X-ray can show a fracture of the shin bone or the thin outer bone, how well a fracture is healing, or changes in bone such as thickening or an area that needs further tests.
Who usually has this test
People with a shin injury from a fall, sport or road accident, those with a plaster cast being checked, and some with long-standing shin pain.
Risks and aftercare
Moving an injured leg can be painful, and staff will help you; the X-ray itself is not felt, the dose is low, and mention any chance of pregnancy.

Questions about this test
Can shin splints show on an X-ray?
Shin splints usually do not show on X-ray. An X-ray helps rule out a fracture, and an MRI may be used if a stress fracture is suspected.
Why does my lower leg X-ray include the knee and ankle?
The two leg bones are joined at both ends, so a break in one can come with an injury at a joint. Including both ends avoids missing it.
Can a leg X-ray show a blood clot?
No, a blood clot in a vein does not show on X-ray. A venous Doppler ultrasound is the usual test for a clot in the leg.
