Questions about this test
Does zinc affect male fertility?
Zinc is needed for sperm production, and very low levels may affect sperm. However, extra zinc has not been clearly shown to improve fertility in men who are not deficient.
Why is a special tube used for zinc?
Ordinary tubes and stoppers can contain traces of zinc that contaminate the sample. Labs use metal-free tubes to get a reliable result.
Can illness lower zinc levels?
Yes. Infection, inflammation and stress can lower blood zinc for a while even if your body stores are normal. Doctors take this into account when reading the result.
