What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A wrist X-ray can show a fracture of the end of the forearm bone, a broken scaphoid or other small wrist bone, a dislocation, or arthritis. A scaphoid fracture can be hidden at first, so a repeat X-ray or MRI may be advised.
Who usually has this test
People who have fallen on an outstretched hand, have pain at the base of the thumb, or have ongoing wrist pain or swelling.
Risks and aftercare
Turning a painful wrist can hurt for a moment; the dose to the wrist is very small, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
What is a scaphoid fracture?
It is a break in a small wrist bone near the base of the thumb, often after a fall on the hand. It can be missed on the first X-ray, so doctors may put on a splint and repeat the X-ray or order an MRI.
Why does my wrist still hurt if the X-ray is normal?
Sprains and some small fractures do not show on the first X-ray. If pain continues, your doctor may repeat the X-ray or suggest another scan.
Can a wrist X-ray show carpal tunnel syndrome?
No, carpal tunnel is a pressed nerve, which an X-ray cannot see. It is diagnosed from symptoms, examination and sometimes a nerve test.
