Hand X-ray
Quick answer: A hand X-ray shows the bones of the palm, fingers and wrist area, and can show fractures and joint changes from arthritis. Doctors order it after a hand injury, or for joint pain and swelling, for example when checking for rheumatoid arthritis.

Questions about this test
Can a hand X-ray show rheumatoid arthritis?
In early rheumatoid arthritis the X-ray is often normal. Over time it can show bone erosions and joint narrowing in a typical pattern, so doctors use it with blood tests and examination.
What is a bone age X-ray?
It is an X-ray of the left hand and wrist in a child, compared with standard pictures for each age. It helps doctors check whether a child is growing earlier or later than expected.
Why are both hands X-rayed for joint pain?
Many types of arthritis affect both hands, and the pattern helps tell them apart. Comparing both sides also makes small changes easier to spot.
