What your results can mean

Reading your report

Results are reported for each organism; partners may also need testing and treatment, so discuss results with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive result can point to trichomonas, gonorrhoea or a yeast infection. Gonorrhoea often causes no symptoms in women but can spread to the womb and tubes if untreated.

Who usually has this test

Women with discharge, itching or pelvic pain, those with a new partner, and some women before fertility treatment.

Risks and aftercare

Mild discomfort or light spotting is possible.

Questions about this test

Can gonorrhoea cause infertility?

Untreated gonorrhoea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can damage the tubes. Early testing and treatment lower this risk.

Is a yeast infection sexually transmitted?

Candida is not usually considered sexually transmitted, though sex can sometimes trigger symptoms. Partners usually do not need treatment unless they have symptoms.

Why might I need a repeat test after treatment?

Trichomonas and gonorrhoea can come back if a partner is not treated. Your doctor may suggest retesting.
