Transvaginal ultrasound (TVS)
Quick answer: A transvaginal scan uses a thin probe placed gently in the vagina to give a close, clear view of the uterus, lining, ovaries and early pregnancy. Doctors order it for irregular or heavy periods, pelvic pain, fertility checks such as egg count (antral follicles), and early pregnancy.

If the result is outside the usual range

Who usually has this test

Risks and aftercare

Most people feel only mild pressure, and it takes a few minutes. Tell the person doing the scan if you feel discomfort, and they can adjust the probe.
Can I have a TVS during my period?
Yes, a TVS can be done during a period, and some fertility checks, like the antral follicle count, are planned for the early days of the cycle.
