Pelvic Doppler scan
Quick answer: A pelvic Doppler is an ultrasound of the pelvic organs that also shows blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Doctors order it to check blood supply to a lump or cyst, suspected ovarian twisting, or blood flow to the uterus.
- SampleImaging (no sample)
- TakesAbout 20 to 30 minutes
- Before the testYou may be asked to come with a comfortably full bladder; follow the instructions you are given.
- In fertility careIn fertility care it may be used to look at blood flow to the uterus lining and ovaries, though its value for predicting IVF success is still debated.
How the test is done
- 1You come with a comfortably full bladder if asked, and lie on your back
- 2Gel is spread on the lower belly and the probe is moved over it
- 3A transvaginal probe may also be used for a closer view, with your consent
- 4Colour Doppler is switched on to show blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A pelvic Doppler can show reduced or absent blood flow to an ovary, which can be seen with twisting (torsion), increased flow in a fibroid or lump, or the flow pattern in the uterus and lining. Flow findings are read together with the ultrasound picture.
Who usually has this test
Women with pelvic pain, a cyst or lump that needs its blood supply checked, suspected ovarian twisting, or some women in a fertility work-up.
Risks and aftercare
There is no radiation; a full bladder can feel uncomfortable until you empty it, and the internal probe, if used, may cause mild pressure.
Names and options
Also called: Doppler study of pelvis, uterine artery Doppler, ovarian Doppler
Listed by the hospital as
- DOPPLER STUDY OF PELVIS
Questions about this test
Does a pelvic Doppler predict IVF success?
Blood flow to the uterus and ovaries has been studied, but its value for predicting IVF success is still debated. Your doctor may use it alongside other scan findings.
Can a pelvic Doppler show ovarian torsion?
It can show reduced blood flow to a twisted ovary, but normal flow does not fully rule out torsion. Sudden severe pelvic pain needs urgent medical attention.
Why might the scan be done both over the belly and internally?
The belly scan gives an overview of the pelvis, and the internal scan gives a closer, clearer view of the uterus and ovaries. Using both helps the sonographer see everything.
