Thyroid ultrasound
Quick answer: A thyroid ultrasound shows the size and texture of the thyroid gland in the neck and any lumps (nodules). Doppler adds information on blood flow. Doctors order it for a neck swelling or lump, abnormal thyroid blood tests, or to follow known nodules.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
The scan can show an enlarged gland (goitre), one or more nodules, cysts, or a texture change seen with thyroiditis such as Hashimoto's. Most nodules are harmless, and the scan features help decide whether a needle test (FNAC) is needed.
Who usually has this test
People with a lump or swelling in the neck, abnormal thyroid blood tests with a concern on examination, or known nodules being followed.
Risks and aftercare
It uses no radiation and is safe when trying to conceive or in pregnancy; tilting the neck back can feel a little awkward, and there is no aftercare.

Questions about this test
Are thyroid nodules common?
Yes, thyroid nodules are very common, especially in women, and most are not cancer. The ultrasound appearance helps decide which ones need a needle test.
Do I need a thyroid ultrasound if my TSH is abnormal?
Not always. Many thyroid conditions are diagnosed and treated from blood tests alone, and a scan is added when there is a lump, swelling or other concern.
Can a thyroid ultrasound be done when I am pregnant?
Yes, ultrasound uses sound waves with no radiation and is safe in pregnancy. Your doctor may order it if a thyroid lump is found during pregnancy.
