What your results can mean

Reading your report

A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

A neck ultrasound can show enlarged lymph nodes, which are often from infection, a salivary gland swelling, a thyroid lump, a cyst, or a lump with features that may need a needle test.

Who usually has this test

People with a lump or swelling in the neck, swollen glands that have not settled, or a known neck problem being followed up.

Risks and aftercare

This is a sound-wave scan with no radiation; lying with the neck extended may feel awkward, and there is nothing to do afterwards.

Questions about this test

Are swollen neck glands serious?

Most swollen neck glands are from infections such as a cold or sore throat and settle within a few weeks. A doctor should check glands that keep growing, feel hard, or last more than a few weeks.

Is a neck ultrasound the same as a thyroid ultrasound?

A thyroid ultrasound focuses on the thyroid gland, while a neck ultrasound looks more widely at lymph nodes, salivary glands and other lumps. They often overlap.

Can a neck ultrasound show TB glands?

Ultrasound can show swollen nodes with features that may suggest tuberculosis, but it cannot confirm it. A needle sample is usually needed to confirm the cause.
