TB PCR test
Quick answer: A TB PCR test looks for the genetic material (DNA) of TB bacteria in a sample, and some versions also detect related non-TB mycobacteria. It is used when TB is suspected, to help confirm it faster than culture.
- SampleSputum, blood, fluid or CSF
- TakesA few minutes for sputum or blood; longer if fluid or CSF is collected by a procedure
- Before the testFor sputum, give a deep-cough sample, often first thing in the morning; other samples are collected by a doctor.
How the test is done
- 1For sputum, you rinse your mouth with water and cough deeply into a container
- 2Sputum is often collected first thing in the morning
- 3Blood, fluid or spinal fluid samples are collected by staff or a doctor
- 4The lab tests the sample for TB bacteria DNA
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A negative result does not always rule out TB, so it is read with your symptoms and other tests; discuss it with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result means DNA of TB bacteria, or related mycobacteria in some versions, was found, which can support a diagnosis of TB. A negative result makes TB less likely but does not rule it out, especially when few bacteria are present.
Who usually has this test
People with a long cough, fever, night sweats or weight loss, and those with fluid or other samples where TB is suspected.
Risks and aftercare
Giving sputum or blood has little risk; after a fluid or spinal fluid procedure, you may have some soreness or a headache.

Questions about this test
How is TB PCR different from a sputum smear?
A smear looks for TB bacteria under a microscope, while PCR detects their DNA, which can find TB even when fewer bacteria are present. Some PCR tests can also check for resistance to the medicine rifampicin.
How do I give a good sputum sample?
Rinse your mouth with water, take a few deep breaths, and cough deeply from your chest to bring up phlegm, not saliva. An early morning sample often works well.
Can TB PCR tell active from past TB?
PCR can sometimes detect DNA from dead bacteria, especially soon after treatment. Doctors read it with your symptoms and other tests, and it is not usually used to check if treatment has worked.
