Questions about this test
What does a high CSF protein mean?
A high CSF protein means there is inflammation, infection, bleeding or a blockage affecting the brain or spinal cord. It is a general finding, so doctors use other CSF results and scans to find the cause.
What other tests are done on spinal fluid?
CSF is usually also checked for sugar, cell counts and signs of infection, and sometimes for antibodies or cancer cells. Together these give a clearer picture than protein alone.
How can I reduce headache after a lumbar puncture?
Resting and drinking fluids may help. If you have a headache that gets worse when you sit or stand, or lasts more than a day or two, contact your doctor.
