What your results can mean

Reading your report

Normal ranges differ between labs, so compare your result with the range printed on your report and discuss it with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A high LDH can be seen with tissue damage from many causes, including red cell breakdown (haemolysis), liver disease, muscle injury, some infections, HELLP syndrome in pregnancy and some cancers. Low levels are uncommon and rarely a concern.

Who usually has this test

People being checked for haemolytic anaemia, tissue damage or some cancers, and pregnant women when HELLP syndrome is suspected.

Risks and aftercare

Minor bruising at the needle site is possible and usually fades quickly.

Questions about this test

What does a high LDH level mean?

A high LDH means cells somewhere in the body have been damaged and released the enzyme. Because LDH is found in many tissues, the test does not show where the damage is, so doctors use other tests to find the cause.

Can a blood sample give a falsely high LDH?

Yes. If red cells break during collection or handling, LDH from inside them can raise the result. If the result does not fit your condition, your doctor may ask for a repeat sample.

Why is LDH checked in pregnancy?

LDH is one of the tests used when HELLP syndrome is suspected, a serious complication linked with preeclampsia. It is read along with platelet count and liver enzymes.
