What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A nasal bone X-ray can show a crack or displaced break in the nasal bones. Many nose fractures are judged by how the nose looks and works once swelling settles, so the X-ray result is only part of the picture.
Who usually has this test
People who have had a blow to the nose from a fall, sport or fight, with pain, swelling or a change in shape.
Risks and aftercare
A swollen nose may feel tender when positioned, but the X-ray is not felt; the dose is small, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
Do I need an X-ray for a broken nose?
Often not. Many doctors decide based on examination after swelling goes down, usually within a week, because treatment depends on the shape of the nose and your breathing.
When should I see a doctor urgently after a nose injury?
Get urgent help for heavy bleeding that will not stop, clear fluid from the nose, a swelling inside the nose, or a head injury with drowsiness or vomiting.
Can a nasal X-ray show a bent septum?
The septum is mostly cartilage, which does not show well on X-ray. A doctor usually checks it by looking inside the nose.
