Venous Doppler scan of the arms or legs
Quick answer: A venous Doppler is an ultrasound that shows blood flow in the veins and can find blood clots (DVT) or leaky valves behind varicose veins. Doctors order it for a swollen, painful leg or arm, suspected clot, or varicose veins.
- SampleImaging (no sample)
- TakesAbout 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how many veins are checked
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
- In fertility carePregnancy raises the risk of blood clots, so this scan may be ordered if a leg becomes swollen or painful during or after pregnancy.
How the test is done
- 1You lie on a couch, or stand holding a support for varicose vein checks
- 2Gel is applied and the probe is pressed along the veins from groin or armpit downwards
- 3The sonographer presses gently to see if each vein squeezes flat, which shows no clot
- 4For varicose veins your calf may be squeezed to check whether blood flows backwards
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A sonologist or radiologist reports on the scan, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A venous Doppler can show a clot in a deep vein (DVT) or a surface vein, leaky valves that let blood flow backwards (venous reflux) behind varicose veins, or old scarring from a past clot.
Who usually has this test
People with a swollen, warm or painful leg or arm, pregnant or recently delivered women with leg swelling, and people with varicose veins.
Risks and aftercare
No radiation is used and it is safe in pregnancy; pressing on a swollen, tender leg can be sore, and if a clot is found you will usually be told what to do the same day.

Questions about this test
Can a venous Doppler be done during pregnancy?
Yes, it uses sound waves with no radiation, so it is safe in pregnancy. It is the usual first test if a clot is suspected in a pregnant woman's leg.
What does it mean if no clot is seen?
A clear scan makes a clot in the scanned veins unlikely. If symptoms continue or the scan is unclear, your doctor may repeat it after a few days.
Why do I need to stand for a varicose vein scan?
Leaky valves are easiest to see when gravity pulls blood down the leg. Standing lets the sonographer see whether blood flows backwards.
