Knee X-ray
Quick answer: A knee X-ray shows the knee joint bones and the space between them, and can show fractures and arthritis. Doctors order it for knee pain, swelling, injury or stiffness. The skyline view shows the kneecap and its groove.
- SampleImaging (no sample)
- TakesAbout 10 to 15 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed, but remove metal items from the area and tell staff if you might be pregnant.
How the test is done
- 1You change into shorts or a gown so the knee is uncovered
- 2For the front view you stand or lie with your leg straight
- 3For the side view you lie on your side with the knee slightly bent
- 4For the skyline view you bend the knee so the kneecap is seen from above
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A knee X-ray can show a fracture, narrowing of the joint space and bony spurs from osteoarthritis, a kneecap sitting out of its groove, or loose pieces of bone. Torn ligaments and cartilage such as the meniscus do not show and may need an MRI.
Who usually has this test
People with knee pain on walking or climbing stairs, swelling, locking, or an injury from a fall or sport.
Risks and aftercare
Bending a painful knee for the skyline view may be uncomfortable; the dose to the knee is low, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
Why is a knee X-ray taken standing?
Standing shows how much space is left in the joint when it carries your weight. This gives a truer picture of arthritis than a lying view.
Can a knee X-ray show a meniscus tear?
No, the meniscus is cartilage and does not show on X-ray. Doctors use an MRI if a meniscus or ligament tear is suspected.
What does joint space narrowing mean on a knee X-ray?
It means the gap between the bones is smaller than usual, often because the cartilage has worn thin. It is a common sign of osteoarthritis.
