Questions about this test
What does undetectable mean?
It means the amount of virus is too low for the test to find. People with an undetectable viral load on treatment do not pass HIV to sexual partners.
How often is viral load checked?
It is checked a few months after starting treatment and then usually every 6 to 12 months once stable. Your doctor may check more often in pregnancy.
Why does viral load matter for pregnancy and IVF?
An undetectable viral load greatly lowers the chance of passing HIV to a partner or baby. Doctors aim for this before conception and throughout pregnancy.
