Questions about this test
Why can't babies be tested with an HIV antibody test?
A mother's antibodies cross to the baby and can stay for up to 18 months. A DNA test looks for the virus itself, so it shows the baby's own status.
When are babies tested for HIV?
Testing is usually done at set times in the first weeks and months of life, and again after breastfeeding ends. Your doctor will give you the schedule.
Does HIV treatment affect proviral DNA?
Treatment lowers the virus in the blood, but HIV DNA can stay inside cells. That is why this test is not used to check treatment response.
