Haptoglobin blood test
Quick answer: A haptoglobin test measures a protein that binds haemoglobin released from broken red blood cells. Doctors order it to check whether anaemia is caused by red blood cells breaking down faster than normal (haemolysis).

- TakesAbout 5 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
How the test is done
- 1You sit and a band is placed on your upper arm
- 2A needle draws blood into a tube
- 3The lab measures haptoglobin
- 4It is usually read with bilirubin, LDH and a blood count
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Normal ranges differ between labs and by age and sex, so discuss your result with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low level can be seen when red cells are breaking down faster than normal, and with severe liver disease. A high level can be seen with infection or inflammation, which can hide red cell breakdown.
Who usually has this test
People with anaemia where red cell breakdown is suspected, such as with jaundice or dark urine.
Risks and aftercare
Nothing more is needed once the needle site stops bleeding.
Names and options
Also called: haptoglobin
Listed by the hospital as
- HAPTOGLOBULIN, SERUM
Questions about this test
Why does haptoglobin fall when red cells break down?
Haptoglobin binds haemoglobin released from broken red cells, and the bound pair is removed from the blood. This uses up haptoglobin.
Can inflammation affect haptoglobin?
Yes. It rises with inflammation, so a normal result does not always rule out red cell breakdown.
Is a low haptoglobin always a concern?
Not always. Some people are born with low levels. Your doctor reads it with your other tests.
