How the test is done

  1. 1You remove clothing and jewellery from the arm and shoulder and wear a gown
  2. 2You stand or sit with your back against the upright plate
  3. 3Your arm hangs by your side, turned outward for one view and inward for another
  4. 4If moving the arm hurts, the machine is angled instead of turning you

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.

If the result is outside the usual range

A humerus X-ray can show a fracture of the shaft or near the shoulder, the position of a healing fracture, or areas of bone that look unusual and need further tests.

Who usually has this test

People who have fallen onto the shoulder or arm, older adults with a fall, and those with a known upper arm fracture being followed up.

Risks and aftercare

Holding a broken arm in position can hurt for a short time; the radiation is low, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test

Can I keep my sling on for a humerus X-ray?

Often yes. Staff may take the pictures with the sling on or angle the machine so you do not have to move the arm much.

Why does a humerus X-ray include the shoulder and elbow?

A break in the upper arm bone can affect the joint at either end. Including both joints helps your doctor plan treatment.

Can an upper arm X-ray show nerve damage?

No, nerves do not show on X-ray. If your hand or wrist feels weak or numb after an arm fracture, your doctor will check the nerves by examination.
