CSF culture and sensitivity
Quick answer: This test checks cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid around the brain and spine, for bacteria or fungi and which medicines work against them. It is used when meningitis or another brain or spinal infection is suspected.
- SampleFluid (cerebrospinal fluid)
- TakesAbout 20 to 30 minutes
- Before the testThe fluid is collected by a doctor through a lumbar puncture; they will explain any preparation.
How the test is done
- 1You lie curled on your side or sit leaning forward
- 2The doctor cleans and numbs your lower back
- 3A thin needle is placed between the spine bones to collect fluid
- 4The fluid goes to the lab for staining and culture
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Results are read with the CSF cell count and chemistry; discuss them with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
Growth of bacteria or fungi can point to meningitis or other brain and spinal infections, which need urgent treatment. No growth makes bacterial infection less likely, especially if no antibiotics were given first.
Who usually has this test
People with suspected meningitis, such as fever with severe headache, stiff neck or confusion.
Risks and aftercare
You may be asked to lie flat for a while; a headache or sore back can follow, so drink fluids and tell staff if the headache is severe.
Names and options
Also called: spinal fluid culture, CSF C/S, meningitis culture
Listed by the hospital as
- CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY, CSF
Questions about this test
Is a lumbar puncture risky?
It is a common procedure, and serious problems are rare. Headache is the most common side effect, and infection or bleeding are uncommon.
Why might I have a scan before the procedure?
Doctors sometimes do a CT scan first to check that the pressure in the brain makes the test safe. This depends on your symptoms.
What other tests are done on the same fluid?
Cell counts, sugar and protein, a Gram stain and sometimes PCR tests for viruses are often done. Together they help find the cause quickly.
