AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) blood test
Quick answer: An AMH test measures anti-Müllerian hormone, which is made by small follicles in the ovaries and gives an estimate of your remaining egg supply (ovarian reserve). Fertility doctors order it to plan IVF stimulation, to estimate how you may respond to fertility medicines, and when PCOS or early menopause is suspected.

- TakesAbout 5 minutes
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed; it can usually be done on any day of the cycle.
- In fertility careAMH helps your doctor choose the dose of stimulation medicines for IVF, but it does not tell you whether you can get pregnant naturally.
How the test is done
- 1You can usually come on any day of your cycle
- 2The inside of your elbow is cleaned
- 3A needle draws a small amount of blood
- 4Your doctor reads the AMH result with your age and ovary scan
What your results can mean
Reading your report
AMH falls with age and ranges differ between labs, so your doctor reads it with your age and scan findings.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low level can be seen with a reduced egg supply, which becomes more common with age or after ovary surgery. A high level can be seen with PCOS and can mean a strong response to IVF medicines.
Who usually has this test
Women planning IVF or egg freezing, women with irregular periods or suspected PCOS, and women concerned about early menopause.
Risks and aftercare
Bruising at the needle site is possible; nothing else is needed.

Questions about this test
Does a low AMH mean I cannot get pregnant?
No. A low AMH means fewer eggs are likely to remain, but it does not measure egg quality or predict natural pregnancy on its own. Many women with low AMH conceive, and your doctor will look at your age and other tests too.
Do I need to do the AMH test on a particular day of my period?
Usually not. AMH stays fairly steady through the cycle, so it can generally be done on any day. Hormonal contraception can lower it a little, so tell your doctor if you take it.
What does a high AMH mean?
A high AMH often means many small follicles, which is common with PCOS. In IVF it can mean a strong response to medicines, so your doctor may adjust doses.
