What your results can mean

Reading your report

Labs and guidelines use slightly different cut-offs for low and adequate levels, so discuss your result with your doctor before starting high-dose supplements.

If the result is outside the usual range

A low level can be seen with little sun exposure, darker skin, covered clothing, excess weight, gut absorption problems or kidney or liver disease. A high level is usually seen with too many high-dose supplements and can raise calcium.

Who usually has this test

People with bone pain, weakness or bone thinning, low calcium, limited sun exposure, and many people trying to conceive or pregnant.

Risks and aftercare

You can go outdoors and carry on as normal; a slight bruise is the usual only effect.

Questions about this test

Is vitamin D deficiency common in India?

Yes. Despite plenty of sunshine, many people in India have low vitamin D because of indoor lifestyles, covered skin, darker skin and diet. Your doctor will advise whether you need a supplement and at what dose.

Do I need to fast for a vitamin D test?

No. Fasting is not usually needed for a vitamin D test.

Can too much vitamin D be harmful?

Yes. Taking high-dose supplements for a long time without monitoring can raise calcium and cause nausea, thirst, kidney stones and other problems. Follow your doctor's dose and recheck if advised.
