What your results can mean
Reading your report
Results are usually reported as present or absent; your doctor will read them with your other tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
Fat in urine can be seen with nephrotic syndrome, where the kidneys leak protein, and less often after major bone fractures or with chyluria. Its absence makes these less likely but does not rule them out.
Who usually has this test
People with body swelling and heavy protein in urine, or after major bone injuries, at a doctor's request.
Risks and aftercare

Questions about this test
What is lipiduria?
Lipiduria means fat in the urine. It is most often linked with nephrotic syndrome, a kidney condition where large amounts of protein leak out.
Is fat in urine the same as chyluria?
Not quite. Chyluria is milky urine from leaking lymph fluid, while fat globules can come from the kidney itself. Doctors use the full picture to tell them apart.
Can fat in urine come from the container?
Yes, lubricants, creams or an unclean container can add oil droplets. Use only the clean container provided and avoid touching the inside.
